Abstract

The invention comprises polyamines of the general formula <FORM:0989560/C2/1> They may be prepared by refluxing one or more dihydric phenols in solution in an inert solvent with one or more alkali metal or ammonium bisulphites to form a bisulphite compound which is refluxed in solution in an inert solvent with one or more phenylene diamines, the molar ratio of phenols to diamines being approximately 1:1. The inert solvent in both stages of the reaction is preferably water. Specification 989,559 is referred to.ALSO:Polyamines of the general formula <FORM:0989560/C4-C5/1> are used as antioxidants for lubricating oil and fuel oil compositions, examples are given of (a) a lubricating oil prepared from cupryl acid, 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane and sebacic acid in the molar ratio 2.8 : 1.0 : 0.1 and containing 1.5% by weight of one of the above polyamines; and (b) a catalytically cracked gasoline containing the antioxidant in the proportion of 15 lb./100 barrels.
