Abstract

989,053. Resilient mountings. W. CHRISTIE & GREY Ltd., and DUNLOP RUBBER CO. March 6, 1962 [March 8, 1961], No. 8389/61. Heading F2S. A resilient suspension unit 1 for a machine, apparatus, or vehicle which provides adequate lateral stability at low vibration frequencies comprises a fabric-reinforced rubber bellows 2 which is secured to end plates 3 between abutment faces 7 of which is coaxially located a stiff short coil spring 6 having a cross-sectional diameter of ¥ of an inch and a mean diameter of 6¥ of an inch. The overall length of the uncompressed spring 6 is 5¢ inches and when statically loaded its length is 3¢ inches. Formulae are given to prove that, in order to obtain a ratio of lateral to axial stiffness of 1.75: 1, the overall length of the spring, when statically loaded, should be ¥ or less than ¥ of the mean diameter of the spring. A machine suspension is made up of a number of units 1 an air pipe 5, secured in one of the end plates 3 of each unit 1, being connected, through a valve, not shown, to a source of constant pressure. The unit may include at least one additional bellows.
