Abstract

988,758. Sorting letters &c. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 8, 1963 [Nov. 12, 1962], No. 44166/63. Heading B8A. [Also in Division G4] A mechanical data storage device which may be used for sorting letters includes pairs of rotatable magnets, one magnet of each pair being set to store data while the other is used to retain the set magnet in position. As described an operator selects 1 of 1000 possible destinations and enters three decimal digits using a keyboard having three sets of ten keys. The keys set switches 7, 8 of three sets of five electromagnets 5 so that the directions of magnetization of the cores 4 represent the digits in 2 out of 5 code. A rotary drum 20 carries uniformly spaced sets of wires 22, 23. Each wire 22 has three sets of five magnets which are rotated under the influence of the electromagnets 5 to indicate the three digits, and each wire 23 has three sets of five similar magnets each of which acts with its corresponding one on the wire 22 as a bi-stable pair. The drum rotates and the information is passed to further less powerful bi-stable pairs of rotary magnets 27, 28 on a carrier such as 26 on a chain conveyer. At a reading station, control relays 31 for each of 1000 destinations have six serially connected reed switches 13 connected to each relay, the six switches being positioned adjacent points at which the six magnets 27 set to the " one " state would pass if the digits stored in the carrier 26 indicate that particular destination. If this occurs all the six reed switches are closed by the influence of the magnets, and thus that particular one of the relays 31 is energized to control transfer of the letter or article to the particular output destination.
