Abstract

988,664. Ratchet clutches. EASTMAN KODAK CO. March 25, 1964 [April 3, 1963], No. 12518/64. Heading F2C. A ratchet clutch comprises an elongated flexible pawl arm which when in operative engagement with a ratchet tooth bears against other teeth for lateral support. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the pawl arm 13 has an integral curved connecting portion 18 with the driving hub 16 and its free end 12 is engageable with internal ratchet teeth 11 for torque transmission, increase of which causes the intermediate portion of the pawl successively to engage the tips of the teeth 11b, 11a, 11c. In the alternative form shown in Fig. 3 the pawl 13<SP>1</SP> which extends inside the hub 16<SP>1</SP> and encircles the ratchet teeth 11<SP>1</SP> has a hooked end 12<SP>1</SP> for engagement with S-shaped recesses in the teeth for torque transmission under tension, when it bears against the external surfaces of the teeth. The pawl unit is preferably formed from plastics material by injection moulding, thereby initially embodying the required curvature of pawl arm 13 and the sharp bend in the support region 18.
