Abstract

988,605. Plate type propulsion units. A. PECK. July 4, 1963 [July 7, 1962], No. 26144/62. Heading B7V. A propulsion unit for water-borne vessels, comprises a tubular casing 1 mounted in a stationary position and containing a drive shaft 3 supported in bearings 2, a non-rotatable concave impeller disc 9, and a cam device rotated by shaft 3 and acting on the impeller disc 9 so as to impart thereto a wobble motion. As shown, keyed and screwed to shaft 3 is a cam block 5. To the rear face of impeller disc 9 is secured an anchor ring 13 which forms a groove in which is loosely located a cam ring 14 which is screwed into cam block 5. Impeller disc 9 also has four peripherally mounted rollers 10 engaging in paraxial slots in casing 1 such that on rotation of shaft 3, cam block 5 and cam ring 14, the impeller disc is prevented from rotating but is given a wobble action. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates the front face of the impeller disc which is formed with a plurality of radial ribs separating an equal number of concave pockets, the ribs being inclined to the plane of the disc to produce a bowl-like face.
