A device for the steam treatment of textile fibres comprises an elongated sealed chamber 5, an inlet at or near one end of the chamber, an outlet at or near the other end, a feed pipe 20 at or near the inlet and adapted to feed steam into the chamber and a plurality of reciprocally mounted pistons 2 adapted to move textile fibres toward the outlet and compress the fibres somewhat, the pistons 2 being so arranged that at any time the fibres are being acted upon by at least one of the pistons. A pair of rollers 1 may be provided at the inlet to draw fibres into the chamber and a spring loaded flap 21 or another pair of rollers may be provided at the outlet. The chamber may be vertical or horizontal and can be of doublewalled construction with steam passing through the cavity between the walls. The pistons 2 may also be heated and can be reciprocated by any convenient means e.g. the ends of the pistons engaging cam means.
