A valve has groups of bimetal discs 8, 9, 10, mounted on sleeves 5, 6, 7 whereby, for a first range of temperature increase, pairs of discs 8 curve and press a flange on sleeve 5 away from a flange on sleeve 6 so that a valve stem 4 connected to sleeve 5 closes valve 3 on its seat 2 and sleeve 5 moves away from an abutment 13 on sleeve 6. A further temperature increase allows bimetals 9 to expand and compress bimetals 8 to load the valve 3 more heavily on its seat. In higher temperature ranges, bimetals 10 expand to compress both groups 8 and 9 until first 8 and then 9 are compressed flat after which further loading of the valve on its seat is produced entirely by bimetals 10. In further embodiments having two groups, the upper group comprises bimetal plates of graduated diameter or thickness or may be replaced by prestressed spring plates.
