Abstract

<PICT:0988033/C4-C5/1> A method of making pellets from coke particles derived from a fluidized bed oil coking process, e.g. as described in Specification 752,400, comprises mixing a carbonaceous binder with the coke particles in an amount between 5% and 35% by weight of the mix at a temperature at least 5 DEG F. above the softening point of the binder, cooling, granulating the cooled lumps to a size less than 2 inches and preferably 1/2 inch, and passing the resultant pieces through a die to form the pellets. Binders used are petroleum base pitch, asphalt binder or coal tar pitch binder, and should have a softening point between 140 DEG and 250 DEG F. Heated binder is atomized at 32 with steam at 250 DEG to 325 DEG F. and led to a mixer 10 for mixing with one or more coke streams at 16, 24. Alternatively, the binder may be sprayed into the mixer 10 or added in lump form, or the coke may be fluidized and the binder sprayed therein. Mixing is continued for up to 1 hour, e.g. 20 to 30 minutes, the mixture, preferably after quenching at 44, being delivered to a conveyer 42 for cooling to 70 DEG to 80 DEG F., i.e. to between 30 DEG and 175 DEG F. below the softening point of the binder, and thence to a granulator 48, feeder 54, and pellet mill 56, the die of which has holes 0.5 to 3 inches in length and 0.25 to 1 inch in diameter. The die may be heated or cooled. The pellets are cooled, and may be baked at 1200 DEG to 2000 DEG F., e.g. after mixing with coke from a fluidized bed oil coking process.
