Abstract

A detergent composition comprises (a) at least one fatty acid alkanolamide, suitably derived from a C12-18 saturated or unsaturated fatty acid but most preferably from one containing 12-14 carbon atoms and (b) at least one alkanolamine phosphate, the weight ratio (a) to (b) generally being 9:1 to 1:9 but most suitably 2:1 to 1:2. In both (a) and (b), the alkanolamine employed is preferably mono- or di-ethanolamine or mono- or di-isopropanol-amine. A further detergent, especially an anionic detergent such as coco-alkyl sulphate, may also be added. The composition may be prepared directly by condensing a fatty acid (or an ester thereof) with excess alkanolamine and adding phosphoric acid to the mixture to bring the pH to 6.5-7, additional alkanolamine being added, if desired, before neutralization. The product obtained is generally a paste or cream.
