Abstract

Ceramic bodies are produced by dry grinding a particulate ceramic material with up to 6% by weight of an organic deflocculating agent, shaping by pressing to form a compacted article of uniform density and firing to form a dense, non-porous sintered body. Up to 6% of an organic binding agent, e.g. paraffin wax, may also be present. The ceramic materials specified are beryllium oxide or aluminium oxide alone or beryllium oxide mixed with minor amounts silica and magnesia or aluminium oxide mixed with minor amounts of one or more of magnesia, chromia, clay, calcia, silica, strontium carbonate and talc. Deflocculating agents specified are sodium or ammonium lignosulphonate, the sodium salts of alky aryl polyether sulphates, the sodium salts of alkyl aryl sulphonic acids, the salts and esters of long-chain fatty acids with more than six carbon atoms in their chain, the metal salts of stearic acid or of monohydroxy-substituted stearic acid, alkylene glycols, polyalkylene glycols, hydrogenated cottonseed oil and hydrogenated castor oil. The grinding step may be carried out using at least 10 parts by weight of grinding balls to each part by weight of ceramic material.
