[Also in Division B5] A method of twisting an elongated article comprises heating a narrow transverse zone of the article and continuously advancing the heating zone along the length of the article while twisting. A twist drill blank 38, held at one end in a fixed non-rotary chuck 37, is twisted, by a rotated chuck 35 holding its other end, as a heater 45 is traversed along the blank 38. The heater 45, which may be an annular flame heater or an induction heater is supported on a carriage 41 together with a water-cooled back stop 46 which restricts the heating area. The carriage 41 is moved along rods 42, 43 by means of an adjustable inclined cam track 68 engaging a roller 69 on the carriage 41 and supported on a carriage 51 moved transversely along guide rods 52, 53 by a threaded shaft 60 driven from means rotating the chuck 35. The carriage 51 may be disengaged from the shaft 60 by turning a half-round bar 63 to lift a spring- urged clutch bar 57 from the shaft 60. Both chucks 35, 37 could be rotated, one faster than the other. The blank may have two off-centre passages 28, 29 bored therethrough before twisting. It may be rectilinearly fluted before twisting or helically fluted after twisting. A long twisted blank may cut in two to provide two drills. Two blanks may be butt-welded, twisted and then cut in the middle.
