Abstract

Friable thermoplastic polymers are made by bringing all portions of a uniphase thermoplastic polymer to a uniform temperature within the range Tf and Tf-20 DEG C., where Tf is the fluxing temperature of the polymer, grinding portions of the polymer upon itself by forcibly moving adjacent portions of the polymer in contact with each other across one another in different directions parallel to their plane of contact for at least 30 seconds to form an isothermal duophase thermoplastic polymer and thereafter lower the temperature of the duophase polymer to less than the temperature indicated by Tf-20 DEG C. to produce clots of friable polymer. By "fluxing temperature" is meant the lowest temperature at which all portions of the polymer are in the fluid state. The term "uniphase polymer" means a thermoplastic polymer which is (1) homogenous, (2) free from interfaces between adjacent portions of the polymer mass and (3) consists of all solid or all fluid polymer. The term "duophase polymer" means a thermoplastic polymer which is (1) heterogeneous, (2) characterized by numerous interfaces between adjacent portions of the polymer mass, and (3) consists of solid and fluid polymer in thermal equilibrium. The grinding action is effected in any mixer that functions with a shearing action, e.g. a Banbury mixer. The polymers treated may contain fillers, plasticizers, pigments, stabilizers, and cross-linking agents. Exemplified polymers are polyethylene, a copolymer of ethylene and butene, a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, a poly-(hydroxyether) (Example 21), a poly-(ethylene oxide) (Example 22), polypropylene, a cross-linked copolymer of ethylene and ethyl acrylate, and a polycarbonate homopolymer of 2,2 bis (4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane (Example 32). The friable polymer may subsequently be ground to a powder of particle size 200 to 400 microns.
