Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0987535/C3/1> wherein Z is a biphenylyl, naphthyl or phenoxyphenyl radical, each R may be a phenyl or a methyl radical, and n is 2, 3 or 4. These compounds may be prepared by the reaction of a compound ZO-SiR2-X (I), wherein X is a hydrolysable group or atom, e.g. chlorine, with water, when n is 2, or with a compound <FORM:0987535/C3/2> where m equals n-2, when n is 3 or 4, or by the reaction of a compound ZO-SiR2-OH (obtained by the hydrolysis of (I)) with a compound R2SiX2, when n is 3. The presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor, e.g. pyridine, is desirable when X is Cl. The compounds (I) are prepared by the reaction of the phenol ZOH with a compound R2SiX2. The examples describe the preparations of 1,3-di-(o-phenylphenoxy) - 1,3 - diphenyl - 1,3 - dimethyldisiloxane, bis - (o - phenylphenoxy phenyl methyl siloxy) - diphenylsilane, 1,5 - di - (o - phenylphenoxy) - 1,5 - diphenyl - 1,3,3,5 - tetramethyltrisiloxane, 1,3 - (m - phenoxyphenoxy)-1,3 - diphenyl - 1,3 - dimethyldisiloxane, 1,3-(b -naphthoxy) - 1,1,3,3 - tetraphenyldisiloxane, and 1,5 - (a - naphthoxy) - 1,5 - diphenyl - 1,3,3,5 - tetramethyltrisiloxane. These compounds are used as deformable screens in a light projection system (see Division H1). Specifications 548,911, 548,912 and 909,143 are referred to.
