Abstract

987,388. Friction and ratchet clutches; clutch control. ATELIERS DE LA MOTOBECANE. March 17, 1964 [March 19, 1963], No. 11228/64. Headings F2C and F2L. An autocycle transmission comprises a freewheel clutch in series with a centrifugal clutch, together with a manual overriding clutch for use in starting the engine, the free-wheel clutch being operative when the engine-driven portion is effective. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 a friction roller 1 on a shaft 3 engages a tyre 2 and is driven by an engine belt 11 engaging a pulley 10 axially movable to bring a conical inner surface 9 into contact with tapered friction clutch elements 8 on a casing 4 secured to the roller shaft 3. The casing 4 and pulley 10 enclose the centrifugal and free-wheel clutches, the former comprising shoes 6 on pivots 12 carried by a disc 13, and the latter rollers 17 mounted between sleeves 14, 15 secured to members 13, 10 respectively. All three clutches are arranged in substantially transverse alignment, thus reducing the overall axial width of the assembly. The pulley 10 is moved axially to operate clutch members 8, 9 by rotating a screwed sleeve 21 on a fixed sleeve 28 by a Bowden cable 22. In the alternative form shown in Fig. 3 the friction drive roller 60 is mounted on the engine shaft 48 and is integral with the portion 42 of the manual clutch, the friction elements 41 of which are carried by a drum 40 axially movable by a lever 43. The centrifugal clutch members 51 are mounted on pivots 52 carried by the drum 40 and engage the friction surface of a second drum 54, the free-wheel members 57 being mounted between sleeves 56, 62 integral with drum 54 and roller 60 respectively.
