A device for controlling the operating cycle of an automatic press, punch or like machine comprises a switch - actuating member arranged for movement from a basic position into an operated position and back into the basic position as a result of passage of an ejected workpiece therepast or as a result of movement of a workpiece ejecting member from a basic position into an ejecting position and back, the switch actuating member being arranged for actuating first switch means on movement into its operated position and for actuating further switch means on movement back into its basic position. In an embodiment a processed workpiece is blown out of the die 12 with an air blast from a device 11. The ejected workpiece passes down a shoot 13 and engages a pivoted control flap 14 which actuates a control switch 19 incorporated in the automatic electric circuit of the machine. When the workpiece passes the flap the switch 19 closes the contacts of one auxiliary relay and when the flap swings back to its initial position after the workpiece has fallen off the shoot, the switch 19 closes the contacts of a second auxiliary relay. Only when both auxiliary relays are closed can the control impulse, which is tripped by the feed mechanism of the machine, initiate a further descent of the ram 24. In another embodiment the ejection of the workpiece is effected by an expeller 27 provided with a piston-rod 25 and a plunger 26. Fig. 2. Supervision of the ejection of the workpiece is achieved by a control plate 28 arranged on the piston-rod 25 which actuates a control switch 29 at the end of the ejection stroke and a second switch 31 at the end of its return stroke. The switches 29, 31 control the auxiliary relays. Photo-electric cells and contact microphones may be used as control contacts for supervising the ejection of the workpiece.
