Abstract
986,585. Bearings. D. T. N. WILLIAMSON, and MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. April 17, 1963 [April 19, 1962; Nov. 21, 1962], Nos. 15314/62 and 44062/62. Heading F2A. [Also in Division B3] A machine tool slide 6 has a bore 5 therein which serves as a double-acting cylinder for a piston 4 which is integral with a shaft 1. The shaft 1 is mounted on blocks 2, 3 and is fixed against axial and rotary movement by the blocks. Ports 9, 10 connect the bore 5 with a tank 13, via a four-way selector 11 and a pump 12. Cylinder-heads 7, 8 are provided. A seal between the shaft 1 and the head 7 is formed by a pressure-pipe 14 communicating through a three-way connector 15 and conduits 16, 17 to inlets 18-20 which have enlargements 21-23 in communication with an annular space 24, which is the clearance between the shaft 1 and the head 7. Grooves 25-27 are equi-spaced between the inlets 18-20 and connect together circumferential grooves 28 and 29 which also are connected by a groove 30 to the tank 13. A similar seal is formed between the shaft and the head 8. The piston 4 has radial holes 32- 35 therein which communicate with an axial bore 36 in the shaft. The holes 32-35 are tapped at 37-40, receive restrictors 41 therein, and lead to cavities 43. The piston also has annular grooves 44, 45 therein which are connected by four channels 46. An axial bore 47 in the shaft connects with the annular groove 44 and has a pipe 48 connected thereto which leads to the tank 13. In operation, when pressure is connected to one side of the piston, the slide 6 moves until the selector 11 automatically stops the movement. Pressurized fluid is supplied by the pipe 14 to centre the shaft within the annular space 24. Some of the fluid leaks in an axial direction into the grooves 28, 29 and to the grooves 25-27 from where it passes, via the groove 30 to the tank 13. High pressure fluid escapes from the bore 5 and passes through a ring seal 31 in the head 7 or 8, so as to provide a liquid seal. Pressurized fluid is supplied to the axial bore 36 in the shaft so as to centre the piston 4 in the bore 5. Fluid escapes from the cavities 43 and enters the annular grooves 44, 45 from where it is returned to the tank 13, via the bore 47 and the pipe 48.
