Abstract

In a process for the afterchlorination of vinyl chloride polymers an aqueous suspension of the polymer is reacted at temperatures from 30 DEG to 70 DEG C. with chlorine in the presence of aliphatic, chlorine-substituted hydrocarbons having boiling points up to 150 DEG C., hydrochloric acid and radical-forming azo compounds. Specified chlorine-substituted hydrocarbons are tetrachlorethane, ethylene dichloride, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform. Specified azo compounds are azomethane, diazomethane, diazoamidobenzene, cyanuric acid triazide, azoisopropane, azobenzene, azotoluene, azodiisobutyramide, azo bis-(a ,g )-dimethyl valeronitrile, azohexane dihydrobenzonitrile and azodiisobutyronitrile. In examples polyvinyl chloride is chlorinated in aqueous suspension in the presence of chloroform, hydrochloric acid and (1-3) azo diisobutyronitrile, (4) azo bis-(a ,g )-dimethyl valeronitrile, (5) azodiisobutyramide and (6) azohexane dihydrobenzonitrile. The products are stabilized with dibasic lead phosphite, lead stearate and dibasic lead stearate.
