Abstract
986,109. Liquid level indicators. BALDWIN INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd., S. J. WRIGHT, and P. W. BOYLE. Jan. 15, 1962 [Oct. 14, 1960], No. 35245/60. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G3] A liquid level measuring device comprises a carrier 13 supporting a radiation detector 14 such as an ionisation chamber, and a holder 15 containing a source of beta rays or bremsstralung, mounted to move vertically with the detector and holder 15 on opposite sides of a column 16 of liquid 11 indicating the height of the liquid in a tank 12. The carrier 13 is moved vertically by a motor 24 driving a lead screw 18 and a circuit, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), actuated by the variation in the detected radiation, controls the motor such that the carrier follows changes in the level of the liquid. The circuit may include a digitising unit operated upon movement of the carrier to give a digital indication of the measured level and the unit may be arranged to operate an integrating counter which indicates the influx or efflux of liquid from the tank. The circuit in response to a signal from the device may actuate a control mechanism including settable switch units (Fig. 4 not shown) by which the liquid may be adjusted to a desired level or the tank may dispense a desired efflux of liquid, the control mechanism actuating inlet or outlet valves in the tank.
