Abstract
986,096. Universal joints; bearings. FIRTH CLEVELAND Ltd. March 10, 1961 [March 11, 1960], No. 45447/64. Divided out of 983,901. Headings F2A and F2U. [Also in Division F1] In a fan comprising a cylindrical bladed rotor having end portions, means mounting the rotor for rotation about its axis and comprising a shaft at either end of the rotor, each shaft carrying one rotor end portion and guide means co-operating with the rotor on rotation thereof to induce a flow of air twice through the path of the rotating blades in a direction generally transverse to the rotor axis, the end portion at one end of the rotor includes a flexible wall portion capable of accommodating minor misalignment of the rotor relative to the shaft at that end. The rotor 5 of a transverse-flow fan is driven by a shaft 26 mounted in a spherical self-aligning bearing 22 and gripped elastically in a central boss 25 of a flexible diaphragm 24 forming part of an end disc 8<SP>1</SP> of the rotor. The flexible diaphragm 24, which accommodates a limited degree of misalignment between the shaft 26 and the rotor axis, comprises annular corrugations 24c and a grooved rim 24a which engages a metal ring 23 forming the outer part of the end disc 8<SP>1</SP>. A similar diaphragm 29 connected to an end plate 2<SP>1</SP> of the fan casing provides a flexible support for a stub shaft 32 carried by the other end disc 9<SP>1</SP> of the rotor. The diaphragms 24, 29 may be injection moulded of an elastic plastics material on to the metal ring 23 or the end plate 2<SP>1</SP>, respectively. Specifications 876,611,943,765 and 943,766 also are referred to.
