Abstract

986,016. Photo-electric bottled-liquid inspection apparatus. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. May 23, 1963 [July 12, 1962], No. 26766/62. Drawings to Specification. Heading G1A. An apparatus for the detection of solid matter in a bottled liquid comprises means for inverting the bottle, a light source arranged to send a beam of light through the neck of the inverted bottle on to an associated photo-electric cell after any gas bubbles have left the liquid through which the beam passes, but before any solid matter has fallen through said liquid, and maintain said beam for sufficient time to allow any solid matter in the bottle to fall through said beam, the photo-electric cell being electrically connected to produce a signal if solid matter interrupts the beam of light falling thereon. The invention is described as applied to an apparatus, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), in which filled and stoppered bottles are transferred from a travelling conveyer to a rotating bottle inspection head and are thereafter transferred back to the conveyer and moved through a rejection gate. Each bottle is clamped in the inspection head between a base support and a retaining arm which engages the bottle top, and during the head rotation is inverted to permit the photo-electric inspection and then restored to the normal upright position ready for transfer back to the conveyer. The heat contains a plurality of inspection stations, each with its associated light source and photoelectric cell. Signals produced by the photo-electric cells are registered on solenoids which by timing means cause appropriate operation of the gate to cause the rejection of bottles containing unwanted matter.
