Abstract

985,618. Tufting machines. CABIN CRAFTS Inc. Oct. 4, 1963 [Oct. 11,1962], No. 39186/63. Heading D1G. A tufting machine comprises a hollow reciprocating needle, and a hollow sleeve adapted both to reciprocate and to oscillate within the needle in order to co-operate therewith for severing yarn loops inserted in backing material by the needle. The portable tufting appliance shown comprises a frame 10 having a handle 10h and journalling a shaft 12 adapted to be driven by a flexible power-driven shaft. A shaft 19, driven via gears 16, 18 from shaft 12, carries crank discs 20 and 30. Disc 20 is connected by a link 22 to a block 24 slidable on bars 29t and 29b. Block 24 is connected by a sleeve 25 to a block 26 slidable on bars 29t and 129t. A block 27, rising from block 26, has fixed therein the rear end of a tubular needle 28 which is slidable in a fixed block 15 serving as a presser foot. Disc 30 is connected by a block 32 to a block 34 which is slidable on bars 129t and 129b, and supports the rear end of a cutter tube 38 slidable and rotatable within needle 28. A spline gear 40, fired to tube 38, meshes with a rack bar 41 carried by a bar 42 slidable within a fixed sleeve 43. A pin 44, projecting from bar 42 through a slot in sleeve 43, is engaged by a pin 45 on disc 30 in order to raise bar 42, against the bias of a spring 46, for rotating tube 38. The arrangement is such that needle 28 and tube 38 move to their advanced positions together, and tube then rotates to sever the inserted loop of yarn Y between longitudinal cutting edges 28s and 38s formed on the needle and cutter tube respectively. Yarn passes between feed wheels 54, 55 and enters a tube 38 through an aperture 38h formed intermediately therein. Wheel 54 is driven intermittently by rack- and-pinion means actuated by a crank 50 connected by a link 49 to link 32. Yarn feed is assisted by compressed air supplied to tube 38 via a flexible tube 38. In a modification the rack is pivoted at one end to a lever which is pivoted at its other end to frame 10 and is formed intermediately with an aperture embracing an eccentric on shaft 19.
