985,046. Measuring electrically. PECHINEY COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTRO-METALLURGIQUES. Sept.29, 1961 [Oct. 6, 1960], No. 35297/61. Heading G1N. In a pressure gauge one or more anisotropic piezo-electric elements are mounted in and subjected to the pressure of a fluid medium, at least one element having apair of electrodes to pick up e.m.f.s generated by the said pressure, and the or each element being mechanically biased by a force directed transversely of the electrodes. The embodiment shown, which is adapted for submarine use in the measurement of "microseisms", comprises a box 1 divided into two compartments 10, 20, the former being open to hydrostatic pressure through holes 3 in a cover 2, said pressure being transmitted via an elastic membrane 11 to a gasless inert liquid 13, e.g. silicone oil, surrounding spring-biased anisotropic piezo-electric crystals 12, e.g. discs of barium titanate. The voltage developed across the crystals is fed via a fluid-tight, insulated conductor 30 to the grid of an electrometer tube 21 in chamber 20, the output of the tube being supplied via a coupling device 5 to measuring and/or recording apparatus, e.g. a voltmeter. The time constant and sensitivity of the device are determined by a capacitor 22 also connected to the conductor 30. Chamber 20 is filled with a fluid under pressure. The gauge may be housed in a container with batteries and recording apparatus.
