Abstract

<PICT:0984825/C1/1> <PICT:0984825/C1/2> A method of refining molten thermoplastic materials (e.g. glass) by concentrating and separating impurities which collect in the lower layers in the forehearth, comprises maintaining the glass at a suitable temperature by a series of burners placed adjacent the glass surface, and/or by submerged electrodes, and causing the molten glass to flow over a dam submerged to a depth of at least one half of the liquid level, and extending the width of the forehearth, thus accelerating the liquid flow, and causing the impure layers to be directed towards side drains of the dam, through which the impurities may be directed to a waste container. The drains, preferably constructed in platinum or platinum alloy may be electrically heated, and extend through the side walls on the down stream end of the dam at the same level as the dam crest and may slope downwardly for easy drainage. The dam constructed of refractory blocks 25 (Fig. 2), may be situated near the feeding orifice or further upstream. The glass flows upwardly and outwardly as indicated at 30, the impurities collect near drain-pipes 26 and pass into waste tank 27 and may be re-used in further batches. The side drains 32 of the dam may alternatively be disposed vertically through the interior of the dam, Fig. 5.
