Abstract

984,506. Railways; hand driven vehicles. R. SMITH. Jan. 3, 1964 [Jan. 8, 1963], No. 870/63. Headings B7E and B7L. The static part of the drive to, or an electric conductor for supplying current to, a travelling boom or movable structure is located in a closable trough. A fixed chain 3 in a trough 1 of rail 2 passes over a hand-driven sheave 10 and guide wheels 11, 12 on a movable structure. Ledges 4, 5 of trough 1 support a flexible band 6 tightened by tensioning means at its end and/or by an adjustable pulley 9 on the movable structure. On rotation of sheave 10 the structure is moved along rail 2 on flanged wheels 7, 8 which facilitate the extraction from, and relaying in, the trough of band 6. A similar drive is provided at the opposite side of the movable structure. For electric current supply a conductor is mounted in a trough of insulating material and a current collector contacts an exposed part of the conductor. The conductor may be raised by the collector passing beneath it, the upper and side surfaces of the conductor being insulated. The rack of a pinion and rack drive may be mounted in the closable trough.
