984,124. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. DRUCKMASCHINENWERKE LEIPZIG VEB. March 2, 1962, No. 8153/62. Heading B5K. Bags are formed from a moving web of weldable material, e.g. polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, in sheet or tube form by simultaneously cutting and welding the web transversely to the direction of movement thereof as it passes over a support 6 by a heated tool 7 which participates in the movement of the web 1 along a portion of the path thereof whilst the support 6 continues to move, the tool, immediately on completion of the seaming operation, moving away from the support at a higher speed than that with which it travels over said portion. The web 1 passes over rollers 2, 3, 4 and an adjustable tensioning roller 5 to the support 6 in the form of a rotatable roller. Between rollers 2, 3 the web 1 may be folded or slit. Cams 8, 11 control the tool 7 to participate in the movement of the web 1 along a portion of the path thereof not exceeding 30 millimetres and the speed of this tool may be adjusted. A cam 9 lifts the tool 7 off of the web 1 after seaming at an increased speed which decreases to that of the web 1 just before the tool 7 contacts the web. An eccentric or crank 10 moves the tool 7 in the vertical direction. Finished bags pass over a plate 13 to conveyers 12. In a modification (not shown), the roller support 6 is replaced by a rotating or oscillating table. The support 6 may be made of glass, ceramic material or brass to prevent adhesion of the web thereto.
