Abstract

984,102. Axle casings. RUBERY, OWEN & CO. Ltd. Feb. 13, 1963 [Dec. 1, 1962], No. 45586/62. Heading B7D. In an axle casing comprising a banjo housing 10 having oppositely extending stub arms 12 to which are secured a pair of axle arms 15, the banjo housing 12 is formed by two identical pressings 13 secured together on a horizontal plane through the axes of the stub arms. The stub arms 12 or the axle arms 15 are joggled and secured within the axle arms or stub arms respectively and secured by continuous welding 20 and plug welds 19 or, as shown in Fig. 6, an insert 21 is employed. The inner ends of the axle arms 15 have a square cross-section which mates with the stub arms 12 and reduces to circular section at the outer end. Each axle arm 15 may be formed by two similar pressings welded together along a horizontal plane, by a rolled strip closed by a single weld, or may be fabricated from tube. A bearing abutment ring 17 and a flange 18 are welded to each axle arm 15.
