Abstract
Polyurethane foams are prepared by mixing and allowing to expand (1) a polyether or polyester containing on the average at least two OH groups per molecule (2) an organic diisocyanate, (3) a foaming agent, and (4) at least 0.2% by weight calculated on the total weight of (1) and (2) of an organo-silicon polymer comprising a polysiloxane fragment and at least one polyalkyleneoxy fragment (R1O)y connected thereto by a Si-C linkage, wherein the total (R1O)y groups compose at least 25% by weight of the compound and the combined weights of the polysiloxane and-(R1O)y-fragments make up not less than 50% of the total weight of the compound. Preferred silicon compounds have the formula <FORM:0983850/C3/1> wherein R11 is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical, radicals containing H, C and O in the form of ether linkages, acyl, trishydrocarbylsilyl, or hydrocarbyl carbamyl, R1 is an alkylene radical, y is an integer of at least 4, R is a divalent hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical, a hydroxy alkylene, hydroxyether, or acyl radical, n is 0 or an integer, Y is hydrogen, hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon or siloxy radicals -OSiY3, Z is hydrogen, hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon, hydrocarbonoxy or substituted hydrocarbonoxy, -R(OR1)yOR11, or -ASiB3, where A is a divalent hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical and B is hydrogen, monovalent hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon, hydrocarbonoxy or substituted hydrocarbonoxy, trishydrocarbylsiloxy or tris-substituted hydrocarbylsiloxy radical. In a modification, (1) and (2) are first formed into a pre-polymer. 14 examples describe the preparation of a variety of suitable organosilicon compounds which are used in the preparation of polyurethane foams from (i) a toluene diisocyanate-castor oil prepolymer, water and ethylene diamine, (ii) a polypropylene glycoltoluene diisocyanate prepolymer, a copolymer of polypropylene glycon and adipic acid, N-methyl morpholine and CCl3F, (iii) a polypropylene glycol-toluene diisocyanate pre-polymer, a polypropylene glycol, triethylene diamine and CCl3F, (iv) polypropylene glycol, toluene diisocyanate, triethylenediamine and CCl3F, and (v) polypropylene glycol, toluene diisocyanate, distilled water and triethylene diamine. Other polyurethane-forming compounds specifically mentioned are hydroxylated monocarboxylic acids, glycerine and pentaerythritol.
