Abstract
A methacrylate polymer or copolymer is copolymerized with a methacrylate ester and an unsaturated diester. The methacrylate polymer may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, n- or iso-butyl or 2 - ethoxy - ethyl methacrylate or a copolymer of the foregoing with styrene. The methacrylate ester may be the same as the foregoing list of esters. The diester may be di-2-ethyl-hexyl maleate, fumarate or itaconate. A further monomer, e.g. styrene, divinyl-benzene, may be introduced. The reagents are heated in the presence of a polymerization initiator, e.g. benzoyl peroxide or azo compound, which may be the residual initiator present in the methacrylate polymer. The resin may be used to form dentures, artificial ears, noses and earpieces.ALSO:A surgical or similar device to be used in contact with the skin has a surface in part at least of, or comprises, a methacrylate polymer copolymerized with a methacrylate ester and an unsaturated diester. The device may be a denture, artificial ear or nose, or earpiece for a hearing aid and is formed from a dough of the above reagents which is then cured in the shape required. An example is given of a denture having a soft surface formed, with the above reagents, on a base of a conventional resin.
