Abstract
1436705 Hydrophilic N-vinyl pyrrolidone copolymers NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 9 May 1973 [23 May 1972] 24147/72 Heading C3P Hydrophilic copolymers capable of absorbing water to form hydrogen comprise (a) N-vinylpyrrolidone, (b) an ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon monomer and (c) a further ethylenically unsaturated hydrophilic monomer. Optionally alkyl or aryl (meth)acrylates and/or cross-linking agents may also be included. Component (b) may be an alphaolefin, arylolefin or isoprene, while (c) may be an alkenol or hydroxyalkyl(meth)acrylate. Diene cross-linking agents may suitably be mixed with a curing catalyst in the copolymerization system, with curing during the moulding subsequent to the copolymerization, which is typically carried out under solution conditions or in bulk between glass plates, using a freeradical initiator. The product copolymers may be used for preparing contact lenses, prosthetic implants or kidney dialysis membranes. In examples, N-vinyl pyrrolidone is copolymerized with hydroxyethyl- or hydroxypropyl methacrylate, using azobisisobutyronitrile as catalyst, in bulk or under reflux in methanol, in one case including styrene as component (c), while in the others isoprene and dicumyl peroxide are included, followed by curing in a mould and formation of a hydrogel. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,395,501.
