Abstract

A fluid composition curable with hardening agents comprises at least one polyepoxy compound and, as reactive diluent, at least one glycidyl ester of, either a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid the COOH group of which is attached to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom (Specification 936,808), or of a mixture of such an acid with a cycloaliphatic monocarboxylic acid. Many known polyepoxides and known hardening agents are mentioned. The acids whose glycidyl esters are employed may be prepared by reacting formic acid or carbon monoxide and water with olefins or with paraffins and hydrogen acceptors, using liquid acid catalysts. Those used in the examples were prepared from olefins having 8-10 carbon atoms, with carbon monoxide and water in presence of aqueous phosphoric acid and BF3. The acids contained 9-11 carbon atoms and the COOH groups were attached to tertiary or quarternary carbon atoms in a ratio of about 1: 9. About 25% of cycloaliphatic acids were present in the product. Glycidyl esters were prepared from the sodium salt of the product and epichlorohydrin. The polyepoxide used in the examples was a diglycidyle ther of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane. Examples illustrate the low viscosity and good pot life of the composition. Examples III, IV describe hardening with diethylene triamine, Example V with hexahydrophthalic anhydride and benzoyl dimethyl amine, and Example VI with methyl endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and benzyl dimethyl amine. In Example VII the mixture of polyepoxide and monoglycidyl esters was mixed with cracked bitumen and a curing agent prepared by reacting a glycidyl ester of branched monocarboxylic acids (C9-C11) with diethylene triamine, to form a bituminous paint. Example VIII is similarly for a paint but the bitumen is replaced by TiO2 and talcum. Example IX is similar to VIII but also includes an amine plasticizer prepared by reacting the glycidyl ester of branched monocarboxylic acids with stearyl amine. In Example X a glass fibre satin weave treated with a methacrylate chromic chloride finish was impregnated with a composition according to the invention and containing diethylene triamine as curing agent. The impregnated material was used to form a laminate, or could be wound round a pipe of rigid polyvinyl chloride. The compositions may include conventional additives, e.g. other resins, or nitriles as diluents and may be used for the usual applications, e.g. coating, impregnating, sealing, foams, potting, casting and adhesives.
