In a slab metal heating furnace of the pusher type there is, in advance of the furnace entrance 1 with its material sliding paths 2 and pushers 3, 4, a platform 5 for slab metal WS in the form of ingots or blocks, stacked on each other and aligned by a stack straightening machine 7 ... 10 operating in the longitudinal and transverse directions, the distance between the straightening machine and the sliding paths being bridged over by a crane 15. The crane has a control apparatus by which it is capable of being guided automatically from a neutral position to a position over the stack of material on the platform whence it takes an individual piece of material from the stack and, according to a predetermined selection, places the piece of raw material on one of the sliding paths B, C or in the case of a piece of large size, on the sliding path A in a given position in accordance with selection made. In a modification, the installation of platform, crane, and associated equipment is adapted to feed material to several furnaces arranged side-by-side by extending the crane gantry in a transverse direction.
