Abstract

983, 313. Microscope optical systems. VISION ENGINEERING Ltd. June 8, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1962, No. 6526/62. Heading G2J. A microscope comprises an object plane 3 and a viewing plane 5, and an optical system comprising an objective lens system 1 for forming a real image of the object at the principal focus 4 of the field lens system 2 the whole optical system having an exit pupil of such a large area that the freedom of head movement within the pupil eliminates the necessity for an eyepiece. Preferably the lens systems are both negative and the arrangement satisfies the equation:- fo x(z - fv) - fv<SP>2</SP> (x - fo) = o where f o is the objective system's focal length, f v is the field lens system's focal length, x is the optical distance between the object plane and the objective, z is the optical distance between the field lens and the viewing plane. Mirrors may be used to bend the light path and a beam splitter 6 may be interposed between the field lens system and 2 and the viewing plane 5 to give binocular vision.
