Abstract
An aqueous dispersion of a diene polymer material containing at least 50% of a C4 to C6 hydrocarbon conjugated diene monomer anhydrously polymerized in solution is prepared by forming a solution thereof in a water-immisccible solvent, the solvent or the aqueous azeotropes therefor having a boiling-point below that of water, adding less than 20% based on the polymer material, of an emulsifiying agent and less than 100% based on the polymer solution, of water forming an emulsion of the resultant mixture and removing the solvent from the emulsion. The polymer may be prepared with the use of Alfin catalysts, lithium metal, organo-lithium, active metal oxide catalysts or organo-metallic cocatalysts. Specified polymers are those containing at least 50% butadiene-1,3 or isoprene or butadiene-styrene. The water-immiscible solvents are methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, carbon bisulphide, benzene, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, or a paraffin hydrocarbon solvent and may be removed from the aqueous dispersion by distillation while the resultant aqueous polymer dispersion may be concentrated by distilling off water or by the addition of a creaming agent and separation of the creamed layer. The emulsifying agent may be cationic, non-ionic or mixtures of either a non-ionic and anionic or of non-ionic and cationic. Specification 821,971 is referred to.
