Abstract

Polymers of conjugated dienes are made by polymerizing one or more dienes alone, or in conjunction with another monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising an organolithium compound dispersed in a hydrocarbon medium which boils in the range of 200 to 700 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure, the organolithium compound being formed by reacting lithium with a hydrocarbon compound. The catalyst may be prepared in a low-boiling polar or hydrocarbon solvent which is removed before use, and which is replaced by the high boiling hydrocarbon medium. The Specification contains an extensive list of suitable catalysts. Exemplified catalysts are an adduct of dilithium-methyl-naphthalene, and a lithium-anthracene reaction. The polymer solvent may be an ether, thioether, or amine. Specified hydrocarbon mediums are mineral oil e.g. petroleum light oil, petroleum jelly, hydrocarbon waxes, extended oils, dodecane, pentadecane, and eicosane. The polymerization is effected in a normal hydrocarbon solvent or diluent. The unquenched polymer solutions may be after-treated to introduce function groups such as -COOH, -SH, -OH, or halogen. The polymers are recovered, purified, and vulcanized by conventional techniques. Specified dienes are 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene, 1,3-pentadiene, 2-methyl -1,3-pentadiene, 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-pentadiene, 3-methyl -1,3-pentadiene, 2-phenylbutadiene, and mixtures. Comonomers may be styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methyl acrylate vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, 2-vinyl pyridene, 3-vinyl pyridene, 3-vinyltoluene, 1-vinylnaphthalene, 2-vinylnaphthalene, and 4-vinyltoluene.
