Abstract

The hydrodealkylation of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons at 540-820 DEG C. and 20-68 atms. is effected in the presence of a sulphur compound equivalent to 20-200 p.p.m. of sulphur. The sulphur compound may be a mercaptan or sulphide, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, n-butyl or t-butyl mercaptan or dimethyl, diethyl or dipropyl sulphide. Alkyl benzenes, alkyl naphthalenes or mixtures of hydrocarbons such as petroleum or coal tar products may be dealkylated.
