Abstract
982,508. Dendritic crystals. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Aug. 19, 1963 [Aug. 23, 1962], No. 32674/63. Heading B1S. A dendritic crystal is pulled from a melt 14 in an induction-heated crucible in a pressuretight container 6 having a conduit 12 containing a vacuum valve 74 and the pulled crystal is wound on a rotary drum 42 in a pressuretight substantially annular container 10 detachably connected to conduit 12. The pulled crystal may be wound between layers of tape unwound from reels 90 and 92 in an angular extension of container 10. Container 6 may have an observation window 16, a cover plate 18 to enable the crucible to be charged and discharged, and a port 22 for producing a vacuum or introducing a desired atmosphere. One of the side walls of container 10 may be detachable to enable removal of the rotary drum. A retractable pull rod 104 may be used to initiate a new run. The dendritic crystal may be of silicon, germanium, gallium arsenide, or gallium phosphide.
