Abstract

<PICT:0982244/C1/1> <PICT:0982244/C1/2> Uranium dioxide is produced by reducing uranium trioxide with hydrogen in an apparatus consisting of a porous bed-plate divided by transverse weir plates into a plurality of separate bed sections, an inlet for powdered solid and gas outlet at one end of the bed, an outlet for solids and gas inlet at the other end, a common chamber above the bed sections so that gas can flow from the gas inlet to the gas outlet through said common chamber and means for circulating the gas from the common chamber above the bed section through the porous bed-plate of the bed section from below, and back into the common chamber. The Figures show porous bed plate 1 mounted in casing 2 with a lower manifold 5 divided into five separate compartments 13 by plates 14, and an upper manifold 3 divided above fine filter plate 12 into five compartments 15 by plates 16. The bed plate 1 is divided into five sections 17 by transverse weir plates 18 leaving a common chamber 19. Heating elements 20 are provided below the bed plate 1 in the first three manifold compartments 13. The manifold compartments 15 are provided with gas outlet branches 25 which are connected (see Fig. 2, cross-sectional elevation along line II-II of Fig. 1) to two-way relay valve 28 which is connected via branches 39 to a blow-back manifold 40, provided with inlet branch 42 through which a purging gas may be admitted, and to gas circuit 27, gas cooler 29, rotary gas circulator driven by electric motor 31, and gas inlet branches 26 for manifold compartments 13. Figs. 1 and 3 show solids inlet 21 and outlet 23. The solids residence time may be varied by inclining the bed and varying the solids and gas infeed rates.
