981,803. Fuel cells. T. G. YOUNG. Aug. 27, 1963 [May 29, 1962], No. 20682/62. Heading H1B. Aerobic bacteria in the anode compartment promote an oxidative ferment in the fuel, obtaining their oxygen from the cathode compartment through a semi-permeable membrane. Alkaline aqueous electrolytes are used and may incorporate a nutrient. Kerosine, vegetable and industrial waste, alcohol &c. may be used as fuel, a surface-active agent being used if necessary as an emulsifier.
