Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high purity solubilized bacterial cell solution, continuously, in high yield, by the use of a porous membrane immobilized with a bacteriolytic enzyme and having pore size to inhibit the permeation of the bacterial cell.
CONSTITUTION: An enzyme capable of decomposing the cell wall of microorganisms, e.g. muramidase, protease, etc., is immobilized to a substrate such as saponified ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer to obtain a porous membrane substrate 3 having a number or pores small enough to inhibit the transmission of the bacterial cells. The hollow fibers made of the substrate 3 are fixed at both ends with sealing material 8 to obtain the treating apparatus 1. A bacterial cell solution stored in the reservior 4 is pressed into the space 6 of the apparatus 1 with the pump 5. The bacterial cell component decomposed with the enzyme immobilized in the membrane is passed through the membrane 3, and recovered through the openings 9 at both ends of the apparatus.
