A fuel cell has a reaction chamber bounded in part by one surface of a catalytically active metal membrane permeable to hydrogen alone, or hydrogen-containing fuel being supplied to the chamber from which it diffuses through the membrane which acts as the hydrogen electrode of a fuel cell.
