Abstract
<PICT:0981595/C4-C5/1> <PICT:0981595/C4-C5/2> Switching of the row and column conductors of an electroluminescent display panel 10, Fig. 1, is effected by means of photoconductive elements 13, 15, 17 and 14, 16, 18 &c. which are illuminated in a desired sequence by means of trigger chains 40 and 401 comprised of stages each of which consists of an electroluminescent element 42 (421) with a series photoconductor 41 (411) and a shunt photoconductor 43 (431). A first optical path 58 (581) provides feedback to maintain a stage triggered, a second optical path 59 (591) to the series photoconductor 45 (451) of the succeeding stage conditions that stage for triggering, a third optical path 61 (611) to the shunt photoconductor of the preceding stage provides for resetting a triggered stage as the succeeding one is triggered, and finally a fourth optical path 70 (701) provides for control of photoconductor connected to the display panel. Switching operations are initiated by illuminating the first stage series photoconductor by a source 56. Triggering from one stage to the next takes place when switch 44 is opened to introduce supply source 48 in addition to the main supply source 52. Constructionally a display panel may be built as shown in Fig. 6. Zinc sulphide may be used for the electroluminescent elements, cadmium sulphide for the photoconductive elements, tin oxide for the transparent conductors and silver for all other conductors.
