981,249. Photomechanical printing surfaces. AUTOTYPE CO. Ltd., and F. W. SHARP. Feb. 16, 1961 [Nov. 18,1959], No. 39050/59. Heading G2M. A hardened-image containing gelatin layer on a backing sheet is applied to a metal plate or cylinder, the backing sheet is removed and the layer is developed in the cold with the assistance of a salt of which soluble iodides, thiocyanates, bromides, nitrates, perchlorates, chlorates and alpha naphthalene sulphonates are specified, to leave a resist; the process being stated to be for the production of photogravure printing plates. In Example I figment paper is processed normally, applied to a copper cylinder, treated with alcohol to penetrate the paper and then with 31% sodium bromide at 20‹C., the paper is peeled away and the soluble gelatin dissolved in the same solution, which may take up to ten minutes, and a final washing in cold running water is followed by drying to leave a resist ready for etching. In Examples II an intermediate layer of polyvinyl alcohol is provided on the paper, which is stripped off after application of alcohol and then water, and 15% alpha naphthalene sodium sulphonate is used for developing at room temperature.
