A method of making welded disc wheels comprising a pair of inwardly inclined discs welded to a hub and rim is characterized in that the rim 1 is cut to length from flat steel strip, bent to shape and welded, welding wheel flanges 2 to the rim, applying a bearing layer 3 to the running surfaces of the rim and flanges and welding the discs 4 to the rim. The discs, which may have a conical form, are located against shoulders 1a on the inner periphery of the rim, connected together by tubular elements 6 located in the bores in the discs and welded to a hub 5. A plurality of cross bars 7 having abutments 8 on which the discs bear and a length equal to the rim width are welded to the rim inner periphery, the discs having clearance cut-outs 9 to accommodate the ends of the bars. Welding of the discs to the rim is only carried out between the cross-bars. The layer 3 may be applied by welding using the submerged arc process or under a protective gas. Driving dogs may be welded on to the members 6. The wheels may be used as crane traversing wheels, gear-wheels, brake discs, travelling wheels and rope pulleys.
