Abstract

981,087. Fluent fuel combustion chambers; burning refuse. SILENT GLOW OIL BURNER CORPORATION. July 27, 1961, No. 27314/61. Heading F4B. Liquid, gaseous or pulverulent fuel mixed with air is projected along a trough at the bottom of a combustion chamber, and the resulting flame and combustion products are deflected upwards to circulate round the combustion chamber to become entrained in the flame, a combustion products outlet passage leading from the bottom of the trough at a point spaced from the burner. In one embodiment, the trough, deflecting baffle and flue outlet are formed in a block of refractory material, Fig. 1, not shown. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, a trough is formed from metal side walls with vertical lower parts 87 and outwardly flaring upper parts 85, connected to a plate 73 closing the top of the space surrounding the trough. A baffle-plate 83 extends upwardly and rearwardly from a plate 89 connecting the ends of the vertical wall parts 87. A flue duct 94 extends from an opening in the plate 89 to the flue 95. A bar 39 of refractory material supported by the side walls of the combustion chamber at right-angles to the trough forms a baffle to guide the combustion products round the chamber. Auxiliary fuel may be fed to the stream of gases from a burner 101, or a burner 101A, or oil fuel may be dripped from the burner 101A on to the top of the baffle bar 39. When an auxiliary fuel is used, secondary air from an inlet 105 is fed to the casing surrounding the trough to issue from holes 107 in the top-plate 73. The primary fuel supply to nozzle 65 may be cut off when the trough walls are sufficiently hot for combustion of the auxiliary fuel to continue alone. A thermocouple 108 arranged in the flue outlet 94 cuts off the primary fuel supply and restores it according to the temperature of the flue wall which will provide a measure of the temperature of the trough. The secondary air supply is cut off when the primary fuel is cut off. In another embodiment, Figs. 12 and 13, a trough of triangular vertical section is formed from metal sheets 175 connected to a top wall 181 within a cylindrical casing. The ends of the trough are closed by a wall 171 through which the burner 65 and air inlet sleeve 205 extend, and a wall 173 connected to a triangular flue duct 199. A plate 187 above the outlet to duct 199 forms the deflector baffle. An upper combustion chamber fits on to the top of the lower casing, and has a dependent cage 239 for solid fuel or refuse, which is burnt with the aid of the primary flame and secondary air passing through holes in the air supply sleeve 205 to the space surrounding the trough and holes 210 in the top plate 181 to the upper combustion chamber. The supply of primary fuel and of secondary air can be cut off or reduced under the control of a thermocouple in the flue passage, which may lead direct to a dust separator.
