Abstract

980,951. Cutting apparatus. THOMAS C. KEAY Ltd. June 1, 1961 [May 10, 1960], No. 16540/60. Heading B4B. A cutting device for use in conjunction with a sewing-machine for fastening tape to objects such as paper bags, comprises a disc 1 presenting outwardly-projecting arms 2 each with two parallel cutting edges 4 at the junction of the leading and side faces, two floating ledger blades 5 urged by spring means 6 towards the disc, and means for imparting intermittent uni-directional rotation to the disc for turning the disc so that the arms act in succession to cut the tape. The disc 1 is mounted on a shaft 8 and operated through each cutting operation by a one-way clutch 7 which is actuated by a rod 9 through electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic means actuated by a feeler arranged to be contacted by the workpiece when the latter is in the cutting position. The clutch may be of friction type or incorporate a pawl-and-ratchet device. Preferably, the disc is connected to a ratchet wheel 15 co-operating with a detent 14 to prevent reverse rotation of the disc, and there may also be provided a similar ratchet device for limiting the angle of rotation of the disc. Alternatively, the successive angular positions of the disc may be set by a series of depressions engageable by a spring-loaded ball.
