Abstract

An emulsifier-stabilizer system for the emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, comprises an amine, from 0.5 to 10 parts of an organic carboxylic acid with more than 10 carbon atoms per molecule per hundred parts of monomer, and a polymeric co-condensate of a vinyl monomer and the anhydride of an unsaturated dibasic acid. Constituents exemplified are monoethanolamine, oleic and ricinoleic acids, and a co-condensate polymer of styrene with a maleic anhydride derivative. In the examples styrene is homopolymerized, or copolymerized with acrylonitrile or butadiene, using ammonium persulphate as a catalyst and dodecyl mercaptan as a modifier.
