Abstract
<PICT:0980468/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0980468/C6-C7/2> Printed circuits and similar electrical circuit elements having spaced conductors, are made by coating an insulating support with a thin layer of metal deposited chemically and then depositing thereon layers of different metals electrolytically. The spacing between the conductors may be formed either by grinding or etching away selected areas of the first thin layer and if necessary one or more electro-coats, or by using an insulating support having a "ribbed" or a raised pattern surface and removing metal formed on the ridges or protecting them from coating. Coatings may be formed on both sides of the support which may have holes, and metal eyelets therein as necessary. For example, an insulator sheet, after applying a mask of the desired printed circuit, is chemically plated with Ag, and electrodeposits of Cu or Ni are then formed. Relatively thick conductors closely spaced, Fig. 2, are made by forming a copper electro-coat 4 on the thin silver coating 1, and then removing a strip of both metal layers, e.g. by grinding, to form an interspace, the walls 6 of which slope away from the space. Heavy electro-coats of copper are then applied but the normal bulges X1, Y1 are reduced and the conductors remain seaprated. In another feature eddy currents in a strip-type conductor are reduced by superposing alternate layers of copper and nickel, the latter being a relatively poor conductor, forming a laminated conductor. In a further development, the laminations may be formed perpendicular to the insulating backing and also in the plane of the backing, Fig. 4, in which ribs of insulator 1a are coated there-between with nickel 3, copper 4, thin nickel 3a, copper 4a, nickel 3b and copper 4b. Metal is then removed from the crests of the ribs to expose the insulator, thus separating the conductors. The nickel layer being a poor heat conductor protects the insulator. It is stated that these conductors, having reduced eddy current properties may be used in rotors.
