Abstract

980,454. Mounting of tubular electric resistance heating elements. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 8, 1961 [Dec. 14, 1960], No. 43033/60. Heading H5H. A heating unit for forced draught high-output operation with air or gas-e.g., for a wind tunnel-includes a tube of resistance material around which is positioned at least one annular supporting member, the two being maintained in coaxial relationship, in a manner permitting differential expansion, and offering little impedance to the flow of gas, by refractory insulating spacing elements arranged between the two and disposed symmetrically about the axis the supporting member may be either a ring, of; which a spaced series may be positioned along the resistance tube, or a tube extending the whole length of the latter. Aluminium oxide spherical spacers 3 and 4, Figs. 1 and 2, are passed through bore 15 in support ring 2, and seat in recesses 6 and 7, whereafter bore 15 is plugged by spot welding disc 9, the recess 8 in which holds the third spacer to maintain resistance tube 1 coaxial. Other shapes of support rings and spacers (Figs. 3 to 8, not shown) and of assemblies containing a plurality of such heating units (Figs. 9, 11, and 12, not shown) are described including a coaxial system, Fig. 10. In Fig. 15, the support member is a tube 80 extending the length of the resistance tube 1, rods 81, 82, 83 constituting the spacers. A modification (Figs. 13 and 14, not shown) employs a cylindrical support tube. The equipment of Fig. 17 employs three heating units 98, 99, and 100, arranged symmetrically about the axis of stainless steel pressure shells 91 and 96, the former provided with air inlet 92. The heating units are star-connected at one end and are fed with three-phase current at the other, via water-cooled bus-bars 94, pressure-sealed terminals 125, 126, 127, and groups of four connection rods 132.
