Abstract

980,315. Electron beam parametric amplifiers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 4, 1961 [Jan. 2, 1961], No. 111/61. Heading H1D. In a parametric amplifier with crossed electric and magnetic fields 8, 7, both perpendicular to the electron beam 6, an input signal whose electric vector is parallel to the electric field is coupled to the electron beam to produce a transverse wave modulation substantially or wholly confined to a plane, the transverse wave being amplified by interaction with at least one quadrupole electrostatic field to produce an amplified output signal. The input and output coupling structures 2, 4 may be two parallel plates or a cavity resonator or a ridge waveguide Fig. 3 (not shown), the ridge of the waveguide being insulated from the rest of the waveguide so that the transverse electrostatic field can be applied thereto. The quadrupole amplifying field preferably comprises a series of fields spaced apart by one half of the cyclotron period and may be formed by hyperbolic or rectangular steps in trough-shaped or plate-shaped electrodes, Fig. 6 (not shown). The magnetic field, which may be produced by a permanent or electromagnet, may be shaped so that it is greater over the input and output sections than over the amplifying section.
