Abstract

<PICT:0979813/C4-C5/1> <PICT:0979813/C4-C5/2> A signal encoder comprises a glass substrate 92, a conductive film 90, an electroluminescent layer 88, column electrodes 86, a black glass enamel layer 84 provided with holes 82, and row photoconductive strips 55 each of which lies between and is in contact with two electrodes. The electrodes 54-66 on one side of the strips 55 are earthed and the electrodes 68-80 on the other side of the strips are connected through corresponding resistors to the high voltage terminal 50 of the earthed voltage source 50, and the junction of each electrode and the corresponding resistor is connected to a corresponding one of the electrodes 10-22 of the electroluminescent digit display device shown in Fig. 1. The conductive film 90 is connected to the terminal 50 of the source 52 and each of the column electrodes 86 is connected through a corresponding switch 0-9 to the earthed side of the source 52. The construction can be modified by using physically separated individual photoconductive elements and electroluminescent elements arranged in rows and columns or by using separate row and column elements, provided all the photoconductive elements in each row are electrically in parallel and all the electroluminescent elements in each column are electrically in parallel.
